Abstract

This study aims to empower students’ literary literacy skills through the implementation of Humanistic Literary Criticism at SMP Unismuh Makassar. The activity was motivated by students’ low ability to interpret implicit meanings and human values in literary texts. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a participatory action research design involving 28 eighth-grade students and an Indonesian language teacher as a collaborator. Data were collected through observation, interviews, analysis of students’ works, and documentation, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The results showed a 22.5% improvement in students’ literary literacy after the program implementation. Students demonstrated greater interpretative ability, reflective writing skills, and awareness of social and moral values. Moreover, the learning process became more participatory, reflective, and character-oriented. It can be concluded that Humanistic Literary Criticism effectively enhances literary literacy, reflective awareness, and empathy among students, making it a relevant and humanistic model for literature learning in secondary education.
